Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 36 and 90 is 180

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 180
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 36 × 5 = 180,
    10/36 = 10 × 5/36 × 5 = 50/180
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 90 × 2 = 180,
    56/90 = 56 × 2/90 × 2 = 112/180
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 50/180 < 112/180 or 10/36 < 56/90
