Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 42 and 9 is 126
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 42 × 3 = 126,
    10/42 = 10 × 3/42 × 3 = 30/126
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 14 = 126,
    10/9 = 10 × 14/9 × 14 = 140/126
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 30/126 < 140/126 or 10/42 < 10/9
