Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 18 and 56 is 504

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 504
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 18 × 28 = 504,
    12/18 = 12 × 28/18 × 28 = 336/504
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 56 × 9 = 504,
    35/56 = 35 × 9/56 × 9 = 315/504
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 336/504 > 315/504 or 12/18 > 35/56
