Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 96 and 30 is 480
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 96 × 5 = 480,
    12/96 = 12 × 5/96 × 5 = 60/480
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 30 × 16 = 480,
    14/30 = 14 × 16/30 × 16 = 224/480
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 60/480 < 224/480 or 12/96 < 14/30
