Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 20 and 45 is 180
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 20 × 9 = 180,
    14/20 = 14 × 9/20 × 9 = 126/180
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 45 × 4 = 180,
    35/45 = 35 × 4/45 × 4 = 140/180
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 126/180 < 140/180 or 14/20 < 35/45
