Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 20 and 63 is 1260
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 20 × 63 = 1260,
    14/20 = 14 × 63/20 × 63 = 882/1260
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 63 × 20 = 1260,
    56/63 = 56 × 20/63 × 20 = 1120/1260
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 882/1260 < 1120/1260 or 14/20 < 56/63
