Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 30 and 45 is 90

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 90
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 30 × 3 = 90,
    14/30 = 14 × 3/30 × 3 = 42/90
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 45 × 2 = 90,
    16/45 = 16 × 2/45 × 2 = 32/90
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 42/90 > 32/90 or 14/30 > 16/45
