Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 36 and 45 is 180

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 180
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 36 × 5 = 180,
    14/36 = 14 × 5/36 × 5 = 70/180
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 45 × 4 = 180,
    8/45 = 8 × 4/45 × 4 = 32/180
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 70/180 > 32/180 or 14/36 > 8/45
