Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 6 and 5 is 30

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 30
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 6 × 5 = 30,
    14/6 = 14 × 5/6 × 5 = 70/30
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 5 × 6 = 30,
    30/5 = 30 × 6/5 × 6 = 180/30
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 70/30 < 180/30 or 14/6 < 30/5
