Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 2 and 9 is 18

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 18
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 2 × 9 = 18,
    15/2 = 15 × 9/2 × 9 = 135/18
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 2 = 18,
    4/9 = 4 × 2/9 × 2 = 8/18
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 135/18 > 8/18 or 15/2 > 4/9
