Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 30 and 56 is 840

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 840
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 30 × 28 = 840,
    15/30 = 15 × 28/30 × 28 = 420/840
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 56 × 15 = 840,
    45/56 = 45 × 15/56 × 15 = 675/840
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 420/840 < 675/840 or 15/30 < 45/56
