Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 36 and 8 is 72

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 72
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 36 × 2 = 72,
    15/36 = 15 × 2/36 × 2 = 30/72
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 8 × 9 = 72,
    1/8 = 1 × 9/8 × 9 = 9/72
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 30/72 > 9/72 or 15/36 > 1/8
