Compare 15/4 and 40/7

Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 4 and 7 is 28
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 4 × 7 = 28,
    15/4 = 15 × 7/4 × 7 = 105/28
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 7 × 4 = 28,
    40/7 = 40 × 4/7 × 4 = 160/28
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 105/28 < 160/28 or 15/4 < 40/7
