Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 42 and 45 is 630

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 630
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 42 × 15 = 630,
    15/42 = 15 × 15/42 × 15 = 225/630
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 45 × 14 = 630,
    6/45 = 6 × 14/45 × 14 = 84/630
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 225/630 > 84/630 or 15/42 > 6/45
