Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 3 and 35 is 105

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 105
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 3 × 35 = 105,
    16/3 = 16 × 35/3 × 35 = 560/105
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 35 × 3 = 105,
    4/35 = 4 × 3/35 × 3 = 12/105
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 560/105 > 12/105 or 16/3 > 4/35
