Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 45 and 28 is 1260

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 1260
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 45 × 28 = 1260,
    16/45 = 16 × 28/45 × 28 = 448/1260
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 28 × 45 = 1260,
    15/28 = 15 × 45/28 × 45 = 675/1260
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 448/1260 < 675/1260 or 16/45 < 15/28
