Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 45 and 14 is 630

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 630
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 45 × 14 = 630,
    16/45 = 16 × 14/45 × 14 = 224/630
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 14 × 45 = 630,
    5/14 = 5 × 45/14 × 45 = 225/630
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 224/630 < 225/630 or 16/45 < 5/14
