Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 45 and 7 is 315

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 315
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 45 × 7 = 315,
    18/45 = 18 × 7/45 × 7 = 126/315
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 7 × 45 = 315,
    4/7 = 4 × 45/7 × 45 = 180/315
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 126/315 < 180/315 or 18/45 < 4/7
