Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 16 and 6 is 48

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 48
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 16 × 3 = 48,
    2/16 = 2 × 3/16 × 3 = 6/48
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 6 × 8 = 48,
    4/6 = 4 × 8/6 × 8 = 32/48
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 6/48 < 32/48 or 2/16 < 4/6
