Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 18 and 9 is 18

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 18
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 18 × 1 = 18,
    2/18 = 2 × 1/18 × 1 = 2/18
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 2 = 18,
    5/9 = 5 × 2/9 × 2 = 10/18
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 2/18 < 10/18 or 2/18 < 5/9
