Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 20 and 7 is 140

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 140
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 20 × 7 = 140,
    2/20 = 2 × 7/20 × 7 = 14/140
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 7 × 20 = 140,
    4/7 = 4 × 20/7 × 20 = 80/140
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 14/140 < 80/140 or 2/20 < 4/7
