Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 30 and 9 is 90

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 90
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 30 × 3 = 90,
    2/30 = 2 × 3/30 × 3 = 6/90
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 10 = 90,
    5/9 = 5 × 10/9 × 10 = 50/90
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 6/90 < 50/90 or 2/30 < 5/9
