Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 36 and 63 is 252

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 252
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 36 × 7 = 252,
    2/36 = 2 × 7/36 × 7 = 14/252
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 63 × 4 = 252,
    50/63 = 50 × 4/63 × 4 = 200/252
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 14/252 < 200/252 or 2/36 < 50/63
