Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 4 and 15 is 60
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 4 × 15 = 60,
    2/4 = 2 × 15/4 × 15 = 30/60
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 15 × 4 = 60,
    42/15 = 42 × 4/15 × 4 = 168/60
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 30/60 < 168/60 or 2/4 < 42/15
