Steps for comparing fractions
- Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
LCM of 6 and 5 is 30
Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 30 - For the 1st fraction, since 6 × 5 = 30,
2/6 = 2 × 5/6 × 5 = 10/30 - Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 5 × 6 = 30,
1/5 = 1 × 6/5 × 6 = 6/30 - Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
- 10/30 > 6/30 or 2/6 > 1/5
