Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 7 and 9 is 63

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 63
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 7 × 9 = 63,
    2/7 = 2 × 9/7 × 9 = 18/63
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 7 = 63,
    6/9 = 6 × 7/9 × 7 = 42/63
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 18/63 < 42/63 or 2/7 < 6/9
