Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 3 and 12 is 12
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 3 × 4 = 12,
    20/3 = 20 × 4/3 × 4 = 80/12
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 12 × 1 = 12,
    28/12 = 28 × 1/12 × 1 = 28/12
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 80/12 > 28/12 or 20/3 > 28/12
