Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 50 and 15 is 150

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 150
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 50 × 3 = 150,
    20/50 = 20 × 3/50 × 3 = 60/150
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 15 × 10 = 150,
    36/15 = 36 × 10/15 × 10 = 360/150
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 60/150 < 360/150 or 20/50 < 36/15
