Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 60 and 48 is 240

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 240
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 60 × 4 = 240,
    20/60 = 20 × 4/60 × 4 = 80/240
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 48 × 5 = 240,
    20/48 = 20 × 5/48 × 5 = 100/240
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 80/240 < 100/240 or 20/60 < 20/48
