Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 8 and 6 is 24

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 24
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 8 × 3 = 24,
    20/8 = 20 × 3/8 × 3 = 60/24
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 6 × 4 = 24,
    4/6 = 4 × 4/6 × 4 = 16/24
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 60/24 > 16/24 or 20/8 > 4/6
