Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 90 and 96 is 1440

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 1440
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 90 × 16 = 1440,
    20/90 = 20 × 16/90 × 16 = 320/1440
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 96 × 15 = 1440,
    42/96 = 42 × 15/96 × 15 = 630/1440
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 320/1440 < 630/1440 or 20/90 < 42/96
