Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 30 and 32 is 480

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 480
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 30 × 16 = 480,
    21/30 = 21 × 16/30 × 16 = 336/480
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 32 × 15 = 480,
    30/32 = 30 × 15/32 × 15 = 450/480
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 336/480 < 450/480 or 21/30 < 30/32
