Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 7 and 8 is 56

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 56
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 7 × 8 = 56,
    21/7 = 21 × 8/7 × 8 = 168/56
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 8 × 7 = 56,
    1/8 = 1 × 7/8 × 7 = 7/56
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 168/56 > 7/56 or 21/7 > 1/8
