Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 16 and 9 is 144
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 16 × 9 = 144,
    28/16 = 28 × 9/16 × 9 = 252/144
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 16 = 144,
    30/9 = 30 × 16/9 × 16 = 480/144
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 252/144 < 480/144 or 28/16 < 30/9
