Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 20 and 9 is 180

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 180
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 20 × 9 = 180,
    28/20 = 28 × 9/20 × 9 = 252/180
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 20 = 180,
    16/9 = 16 × 20/9 × 20 = 320/180
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 252/180 < 320/180 or 28/20 < 16/9
