Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 32 and 45 is 1440

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 1440
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 32 × 45 = 1440,
    28/32 = 28 × 45/32 × 45 = 1260/1440
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 45 × 32 = 1440,
    50/45 = 50 × 32/45 × 32 = 1600/1440
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 1260/1440 < 1600/1440 or 28/32 < 50/45
