Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 10 and 9 is 90

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 90
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 10 × 9 = 90,
    3/10 = 3 × 9/10 × 9 = 27/90
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 10 = 90,
    4/9 = 4 × 10/9 × 10 = 40/90
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 27/90 < 40/90 or 3/10 < 4/9
