Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 14 and 4 is 28

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 28
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 14 × 2 = 28,
    3/14 = 3 × 2/14 × 2 = 6/28
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 4 × 7 = 28,
    21/4 = 21 × 7/4 × 7 = 147/28
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 6/28 < 147/28 or 3/14 < 21/4
