Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 28 and 7 is 28

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 28
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 28 × 1 = 28,
    3/28 = 3 × 1/28 × 1 = 3/28
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 7 × 4 = 28,
    4/7 = 4 × 4/7 × 4 = 16/28
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 3/28 < 16/28 or 3/28 < 4/7
