Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 30 and 80 is 240

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 240
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 30 × 8 = 240,
    3/30 = 3 × 8/30 × 8 = 24/240
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 80 × 3 = 240,
    35/80 = 35 × 3/80 × 3 = 105/240
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 24/240 < 105/240 or 3/30 < 35/80
