Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 49 and 8 is 392

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 392
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 49 × 8 = 392,
    3/49 = 3 × 8/49 × 8 = 24/392
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 8 × 49 = 392,
    1/8 = 1 × 49/8 × 49 = 49/392
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 24/392 < 49/392 or 3/49 < 1/8
