Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 49 and 10 is 490

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 490
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 49 × 10 = 490,
    3/49 = 3 × 10/49 × 10 = 30/490
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 10 × 49 = 490,
    9/10 = 9 × 49/10 × 49 = 441/490
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 30/490 < 441/490 or 3/49 < 9/10
