Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 5 and 6 is 30

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 30
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 5 × 6 = 30,
    3/5 = 3 × 6/5 × 6 = 18/30
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 6 × 5 = 30,
    4/6 = 4 × 5/6 × 5 = 20/30
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 18/30 < 20/30 or 3/5 < 4/6
