Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 6 and 9 is 18

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 18
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 6 × 3 = 18,
    3/6 = 3 × 3/6 × 3 = 9/18
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 2 = 18,
    8/9 = 8 × 2/9 × 2 = 16/18
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 9/18 < 16/18 or 3/6 < 8/9
