Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 7 and 24 is 168

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 168
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 7 × 24 = 168,
    3/7 = 3 × 24/7 × 24 = 72/168
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 24 × 7 = 168,
    1/24 = 1 × 7/24 × 7 = 7/168
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 72/168 > 7/168 or 3/7 > 1/24
