Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 10 and 30 is 30
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 10 × 3 = 30,
    30/10 = 30 × 3/10 × 3 = 90/30
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 30 × 1 = 30,
    96/30 = 96 × 1/30 × 1 = 96/30
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 90/30 < 96/30 or 30/10 < 96/30
