Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 16 and 4 is 16

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 16
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 16 × 1 = 16,
    30/16 = 30 × 1/16 × 1 = 30/16
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 4 × 4 = 16,
    8/4 = 8 × 4/4 × 4 = 32/16
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 30/16 < 32/16 or 30/16 < 8/4
