Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 36 and 28 is 252

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 252
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 36 × 7 = 252,
    30/36 = 30 × 7/36 × 7 = 210/252
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 28 × 9 = 252,
    4/28 = 4 × 9/28 × 9 = 36/252
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 210/252 > 36/252 or 30/36 > 4/28
