Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 4 and 49 is 196
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 4 × 49 = 196,
    30/4 = 30 × 49/4 × 49 = 1470/196
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 49 × 4 = 196,
    1/49 = 1 × 4/49 × 4 = 4/196
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 1470/196 > 4/196 or 30/4 > 1/49
