Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 4 and 20 is 20

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 20
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 4 × 5 = 20,
    30/4 = 30 × 5/4 × 5 = 150/20
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 20 × 1 = 20,
    18/20 = 18 × 1/20 × 1 = 18/20
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 150/20 > 18/20 or 30/4 > 18/20
